Customer Awareness

This page explains two situations you may meet during a loan, so you know what to expect: a late payment, and the death of a borrower.

Classification of Loan Accounts as SMA and NPA

Clear Lend Capital Private Limited is required by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to classify a loan account as SMA or NPA based on how long a payment has been overdue. This page explains the rules so you know what to expect. Source: RBI (Non-Banking Financial Companies – Income Recognition, Asset Classification and Provisioning) Directions, 2025, dated 28 November 2025.

When a payment is overdue

An amount is overdue if it is not paid on its due date, before we run our day-end process for that day. The due date is the date shown for each instalment in your repayment schedule.

SMA and NPA classification

A Special Mention Account (SMA) is an account showing early signs of stress. A Non-Performing Asset (NPA) is an account that has been overdue for more than 90 days. The classification applies to term loans, which are the loans Clear Lend offers.

·  SMA-0 (up to 30 days overdue): Payment is overdue. Pay as soon as possible. Charges stated in your loan agreement may apply, and the delay is reported to credit bureaus.

·  SMA-1 (more than 30 and up to 60 days overdue): Payment has been overdue for more than 30 days. Please contact us to discuss.

·  SMA-2 (more than 60 and up to 90 days overdue): Payment has been overdue for more than 60 days. Your credit score is affected, and the account is close to being classified as an NPA.

·  NPA (more than 90 days overdue): The loan is classified as non-performing. We may take recovery action as permitted by law.

The classification shows the status of your account at the end of each calendar day.

Worked example

Suppose your instalment is due on 5 April and you do not pay it at all. We count the due date as Day 1 of being overdue. The list below shows the day on which your account moves to each stage, as recorded at the end of that day.

·  5 April (Day 1, the due date): SMA-0

·  5 May (Day 31): SMA-1

·  4 June (Day 61): SMA-2

·  4 July (Day 91): NPA

If you pay the full overdue amount before the end of the due date, nothing changes and your account stays regular. If your instalment is due on a different date, the same pattern applies: Day 31, Day 61 and Day 91 after your due date.

Upgrading an NPA

An account classified as NPA returns to standard only after the entire overdue amount, both interest and principal, is paid. For example, if an account became an NPA on 4 July 2026 with ₹50,000 overdue, it is upgraded only after the full ₹50,000 is received. Accounts classified as NPA because of restructuring or similar reasons follow the specific RBI instructions for those cases.

Delays are reported to credit bureaus

We report your repayment status to credit bureaus, including delays of even a few days. Late or missed payments can lower your credit score and make it harder to get loans later. Paying every instalment on time helps you build a good credit score.

If you may miss a payment

Contact us before the due date so we can discuss what is possible within RBI rules. If a cheque or ECS/NACH payment bounces, we will contact you on the same day.

Returning documents to legal heirs

This page explains what happens to a borrower’s documents with Clear Lend Capital if the sole borrower, or all the joint borrowers, have died.

Our loans are unsecured, so we do not normally hold original property documents. If we hold any original document of a borrower, or any unused post-dated cheque, we return it to the legal heirs as described below.

How it works

1.  Tell us. Write to hello@clearlend.in, or to our registered office, with a copy of the death certificate.

2.  Prove who the legal heir is. Send a legal heir certificate, a succession certificate or a probated will, together with your own identity and address proof. If there are several heirs, we may ask for a written no-objection or indemnity from the others.

3.  We tell you what is due. We give you a statement of the amount outstanding. We release documents once the loan is repaid or settled in full. If we have another claim against the borrower, we give you prior notice of it, with details.

4.  We return the documents. We return them within 30 days of full repayment or settlement, at our registered office, or by another arrangement we agree with you. If there is a delay, we will explain why.

If we cause a delay

If we are late in releasing original property documents, and the delay is our fault, we pay compensation of ₹5,000 for each day of delay.

Lost or damaged documents

If we lose or damage an original document, we help you get duplicate or certified copies, at our cost, and we pay the compensation above.
